Pump Out Plugs

The Pump Out Plug is a temporary tubing plug designed to facilitate the pressurization of tubing for setting devices such as packers. Once the desired pressure is achieved, the brass shear screws give way, expelling the core downward and opening the tubing to full bore ID. This makes it a versatile and reliable tool for temporary sealing during completion operations.

Applications

  • Acts as a temporary tubing plug for pressure control.
  • Enables tubing to be pressured up for setting packers or other devices.

Features

  • Full bore ID is achieved after the core is expelled, allowing unrestricted flow.
  • Available in multiple materials, styles, and thread configurations.
  • Shearing pressure can be customized by varying the number of shear screws.

Description

The Pump Out Plug is engineered for operational flexibility and ease of use. It temporarily seals the tubing to build up pressure for setting devices such as packers. Once the required pressure is applied, the brass screws shear, and the core is expelled, leaving the tubing with a full bore ID for subsequent operations.

This tool is available in two core configurations:

  1. Solid Core: Provides a complete seal, ideal for straightforward pressure build-up.
  2. Ball and Seat Core: Allows upward fluid flow during deployment. When pressure is applied, the ball seats against the core, sealing the tubing for pressure application.

Operational Procedure

  1. Installation:
    • Lightly grease the O-ring and install it on the body.
    • Securely thread the shear screws into their designated holes. Ensure they are tightened to prevent loosening during downhole operations.
    • For additional security, lightly crimp the screw shoulders; note that this may impact the ability to reuse the body.
  2. Pressure Application:
    • For solid core versions, the tubing remains completely sealed until the required pressure is reached.
    • For ball and seat versions, upward flow is allowed during running in. The ball seals against the core when pressure is needed.
  3. Shearing and Core Expulsion:
    • The shearing pressure depends on the number of screws installed. Once this pressure is reached, the screws shear, expelling the core downward.
    • The tubing is left with a full bore ID for continued operations.
